Underwriter, Cyber – Wholesale Distribution
The Underwriter, Cyber – Northeast (Wholesale) is responsible for underwriting and managing a portfolio of Small Business and Middle Market Cyber, Technology E&O, and Miscellaneous Professional Liability risks distributed through the wholesale brokerage channel, supporting insureds with revenues up to $2B.
This role will partner closely with key wholesale distribution partners across the Northeast, applying sound underwriting judgment, disciplined portfolio management, and market-informed decision-making to drive profitable growth aligned with AXIS GCT strategy. The position offers increasing autonomy, meaningful broker engagement, and the opportunity to contribute to product development and go‑to‑market initiatives within the Cyber & Technology platform
Candidate Profile
The Underwriter, Cyber – Northeast (Wholesale) will be an early‑career underwriting professional with foundational experience in Commercial Insurance and a strong interest in developing expertise across Cyber, Technology E&O, and Media & Entertainment risks.
Candidates will have exposure to the underwriting life cycle, including submission intake, underwriting analysis, preparation of indications and quotations, and ongoing portfolio support. Experience working with Wholesale brokers within the Cyber and Technology space, or a demonstrated aptitude for broker interaction and relationship development, is preferred.
The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, strong communication skills, and a willingness to learn, with the ability to collaborate effectively with senior underwriters and contribute to the growth of the AXIS Cyber & Technology portfolio. This role offers the opportunity to build technical underwriting skills while supporting broader strategic and underwriting initiatives.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Wholesale Distribution & Broker Leadership
- Support the Northeast Zone SME & Middle Market Cyber portfolio, focused on wholesale distribution, while representing the AXIS brand in the marketplace.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key wholesale brokers and producing offices, serving as a reliable underwriting partner and point of contact.
- Contribute to regional execution of GCT underwriting and distribution strategy, ensuring alignment with broader AXIS objectives
Underwriting & Risk Assessment
- Independently underwrite new and renewal business across Cyber, Technology E&O, and Miscellaneous Professional Liability for insureds up to $2B in revenue.
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessments, including evaluation of cybersecurity posture, technology operations, data governance, regulatory exposure, and loss history.
- Establish appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, and limits using AXIS underwriting guidelines, analytics, and market intelligence.
Market & Threat Intelligence
- Monitor evolving cyber threats, loss trends, legal developments, and regulatory changes impacting SME and Middle Market insureds.
- Apply market insights to underwriting decisions, portfolio strategy, and broker conversations to support sustainable growth.
Client & Broker Engagement
- Collaborate with wholesale brokers and, when appropriate, insureds to understand risk profiles and tailor coverage solutions.
- Participate in broker meetings, marketing initiatives, and strategic planning discussions with GCT distribution partners across the Northeast.
Portfolio Management
- Actively manage a personal book of business, monitoring performance, rate adequacy, retention, and exposure concentration.
- Support achievement of underwriting profit targets and key performance indicators through disciplined risk selection and ongoing portfolio optimization.
Training, Culture & Development
- Demonstrate ownership of ongoing technical and professional development in cyber, technology risk, and underwriting best practices.
- Serve as a culture champion by modeling AXIS values, collaboration, and accountability within the GCT underwriting community.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure all underwriting activity complies with AXIS policies, regulatory requirements, and internal controls.
- Support underwriting audits and governance initiatives as required.
Collaboration & Product Development
- Work closely with the Head of SME & Middle Market Accounts North America, regional underwriting colleagues, and global GCT partners to deliver a unified underwriting and go‑to‑market approach.
- Contribute to the refinement of policy language, endorsements, and coverage enhancements across Cyber, Technology E&O, and Miscellaneous Professional Liability in response to market needs and competitive dynamics.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- 1–3 years of Cyber and/or Technology E&O underwriting experience, preferably within the wholesale distribution channel; experience with SME or Middle Market accounts strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage underwriting priorities, exercise sound judgment, and contribute to a profitable book of business.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and negotiation skills with comfort engaging wholesale brokers.
- Working knowledge of cyber risk exposures, cyber/technology insurance products, and relevant market dynamics.
- Familiarity with applicable legal, regulatory, and privacy frameworks impacting cyber insurance.
- Professional certifications (e.g., CPCU, CISSP, CompTIA Security+) preferred but not required.
- Ability to travel domestically in support of objectives, broker engagement, and client meetings.
For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $100,000 to $125,000. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.
