Underwriter – Builder's Risk

How does this role contribute to our collective success?

AXIS' U.S. Construction team is seeking an underwriter with a focus on Builder's Risk (Project and Master). This role will support the growth and profitability of our Builder's Risk portfolio by underwriting new and renewal business, building broker and customer relationships, and developing technical expertise and supporting business development within the Construction team. This position can be based out of any of our Midwest or West Coast offices.

What will you do in this role?

  • Continue developing Builder's Risk expertise while building strong relationships with brokers and customers and contributing to underwriting, retention, and growth objectives across the portfolio.
  • Analyze and qualify opportunities based upon the organization's appetite and be able to effectively communicate such.
  • Underwrite within the underwriting governance framework.
  • Evaluate, underwrite, and negotiate new and renewal business within delegated authority and underwriting guidelines while exercising sound underwriting judgment.
  • Develop and/or maintain relationships with our broker partners in support of desired business retention as well as work with our customers and brokers to identify their insurance needs and provide recommendations and possible solutions to achieve it where possible.
  • Support business development efforts through broker interactions and the identification of growth opportunities within assigned accounts and territories.
  • Manage assigned underwriting responsibilities and contribute to portfolio performance objectives in support of organizational goals.
  • Participate in industry functions and professional events to continue building market knowledge and representing AXIS professionally.
  • Participate in and help facilitate broker and customer meetings to strengthen relationships, identify opportunities, and support retention and growth objectives
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organization to ensure our customer's needs are met.

About You:

What you need to have:

  • 3 - 10 years of Builder's Risk, Property, or Commercial Insurance underwriting experience.
  • Curiosity and desire to learn
  • Experience analyzing and underwriting a range of commercial property or Builder's Risk exposures.
  • Solid understanding of Builder's Risk coverage, exposure analysis, pricing principles, and marketplace dynamics.
  • Able to analyze standard and moderately complex risks and communicate underwriting concepts or positions to audiences of varying experience.
  • Able to independently manage routine underwriting responsibilities while collaborating effectively in a team setting.
  • Capable of handling time constraints for quoting new and renewal business.

What we prefer you to have:

  • Understanding of both admitted (retail) and non-admitted / Excess & Surplus (wholesale) underwriting framework.
  • Experience collaborating with brokers and supporting relationship development within an assigned market or territory.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Reasonably proficient with Microsoft Office applications.

Role Factors:

In this role, you will typically be required to:

  • This will be a hybrid role with an expectation of being in an AXIS office 3 days per week (as applicable)
  • Travel roughly 25%
  • Participate on weekly team calls / meetings when operating in hybrid environments

What we offer:

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $130,000 - $165,000K. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.

In addition, you will be offered competitive target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
