Description

Join a high-impact underwriting team focused on building and growing a profitable, diversified Public Entity and Government portfolio. In this role, you will combine technical underwriting expertise, strategic market insight, and strong agent/broker relationships to help drive business growth and portfolio performance. Youll serve as a trusted subject matter expert on multi-line business, including professional liability, while collaborating closely with internal partners on key initiatives that shape the business. This is an opportunity to make a visible impact, mentor emerging talent, and help influence underwriting strategy in a dynamic, market-facing role. This position offers a hybrid work schedule with 2 days per week onsite.

Responsibilities:

Risk Selection:

    • Reviews, evaluates, and underwrites new and renewal business by assessing risk quality, determining premium and coverage terms, obtaining approvals as needed, and presenting proposals to agents and brokers. Negotiates terms and conditions to secure profitable business within authority and underwriting guidelines.

External Market Presence:

  • Establishes, develops, and maintains successful relationships with Agents and Brokers to facilitate marketing of products, through responsive service, site visits, in person renewal meetings or enhanced knowledge of their customers businesses.
  • Builds a strong market presence and maintains strong relationships with agents and brokers to support profitable growth, enhance market visibility, and strengthen long-term pipeline quality
    • Maintains a high level of responsiveness and provides effective service through renewal meetings, site visits, and other market-facing interactions.

Portfolio Management:

    • Manages a complex portfolio by analyzing performance, identifying growth and profitability opportunities, and executing targeted marketing and cross-marketing strategies to improve market share, diversification, and retention.

Documenting the Deal:

  • Documents underwriting decisions clearly and thoroughly to reflect sound judgment, compliance with state regulations, letter of authority, and underwriting guidelines. Maintains strong file quality through account reviews, referrals, and sign-offs.

Leadership:

    • Provides technical and professional coaching to underwriters and account analysts, sharing expertise and contributing to the development of underwriting talent.
    • Serves as a resource for complex underwriting questions and provides feedback to management on employee progress and development needs.
    • Partners with leadership on influencing underwriting standards

Continuous Improvement:

    • Participates in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to streamline workflows, improve underwriting efficiency, and enhance team performance.
Qualifications
  • Degree in business, finance, risk management, or equivalent typically required
  • A minimum of 7 years expected, typically 10 years or more, of progressive underwriting experience
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other persons in the organization for underwriting or training purposes
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders
  • Must demonstrate comprehension of most complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business
  • 25% travel required

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
