The Underwriting Associate has two primary responsibilities. The first is to review files that have been underwritten and are outside of the underwriter's lending authority. The second is under write loans including those that have been deemed high risk due to either loan amount or other risk characteristics. The Underwriter will also assist in the management of workflow in the underwriting management queue and help to prioritize loans to meet turn times and scheduled closings. Functions:
- Underwrite high risk loans
- Provide feedback to Assistant Underwriting Coach on Underwriter's quality of decisions
- Sign-off on exceptions to credit policy and procedure
- Provide second signature on home equity and 1st mortgage products
- Assist Brokers and internal staff with files that need to be escalated beyond the normal processes
- Perform the analysis and make credit decisions on loans in accordance with all credit and product policies
- Accurately follow all procedures and processing guidelines
- Thoroughly understand and apply credit policies, loan product policies and all federal regulations related to the granting of credit (i.e., Reg. B, FCRA, Reg. Z, Reg. AA, Reg. O)
- Recommend updates and changes to credit policies and procedures and ensure that the Credit Department is in compliance with those policies and procedures
- Remain flexible and work with team members and management to staff the Credit Department during hours of operation
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of Underwriting experience in a high volume lending environment
- Extensive knowledge of home equity and mortgage lending, prefer banking environment
- Demonstrated ability to learn new systems and concepts quickly
- Extensive wholesale banking credit granting experience in a large financial institution, preferably one using an automated credit scoring system
- An undergraduate degree
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability, willingness and desire to work in a dynamic, changing and fast-paced environment
- Computer literate in a network environment

The ING Direct Home Loans Credit Team is responsible for the assessment and mitigation of credit and collateral risk associated with mortgage lending. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the Credit Team to review and evaluate all loan applications to determine the underlying credit quality of the borrower and valuation of the collateral in a manner which is consistent with ING Direct Credit policies and lending guidelines.
The mandate of the Credit Team is to effectively maintain and enhance the quality of ING Direct's loan portfolio, with detailed analysis, creative decision-making, and strict adherence to ING Direct's Credit policies. Compliance with all ING Group policies, lending and banking regulations, reporting, including but not limited to, loan production, loan performance, SOX, are requirements of the ING Direct Home Loans Credit Team.
